Horses: a historical problem and a poetic problem
The other hecatomb, that of the horses that died during the two world wars, is one of the subjects of Claude Simon’s work. The story entitled “The Horse”, La Route des Flandres, and L’Acacia, deal with the horse in war. I address that the horse is an unstable sign in Simon’s work, carrying opposite values that can place him sometimes on the side of myth and sometimes on the side of a complex temporality. I show how the writer takes up the historical problem of the massacre of horses in the world conflict and turns it into one of the stakes of poetics, trying to express what remains and does not die, what continues to deal with the black hole of history in the “gentle” eye of a horse.
