The Basilidians
Résumé
Basilides was most likely educated in Alexandria and taught there in the second quarter of the second century. The Basilidian Gnosis did not spread much outside Egypt but is still known at the end of the fourth century. Its vision of the crucifixion of Jesus is famous among the fragmentary evidence left by the early Christian authors. Fortunately, two Coptic texts from the Nag Hammadi collection, the 'Second Logos of Seth' and the 'Apocalypse of Peter' (codex VII, 2-3) illustrate the understanding of the bodily nature of Jesus. As a result, these tractates bring a fresh look at the Basilidian Christology and Soteriology.
