Sartre, the creative imagination, and the birth of French aesthetics in the 1920s
With the theory of superception, Sartre’s 1927 dissertation offers an original conception of the creative imagination that places him in the field of French aesthetics, influenced by a German aesthetics pervaded by idealism and Romanticism. Unexpectedly, the issue of aesthetics raises questions about the psycho-corporal domain and points toward the themes of adaptation to the image and disillusionment, which set the stage for the phenomenology of the imaginary and the philosophy of contingency.
