Between Soul and Creation. Simon Stevin's Dialectic and Arithmetic
Liberal arts have a particular role in Simon Stevin’s thought (1548-1620). Thanks to them, this scholar can unveil in his epistemology on one hand what are the innate dispositions of the soul (distinction between true and false, to speak, to count) and on the other hand the foundations of natural objects (name, number, measure, and weight). An art of thinking links then the soul and the Creation and allows codification of different arts and virtuous action. In this article, we would like to show role played by dialectic and arithmetic in this Flemish mathematician and engineer’s art of thinking. We will explore links between these two disciplines and the settlement thanks to them of common tools like proportion and method in the realization of an encyclopedic project.
