Preoperative and Postoperative Speech Therapy

Résumé

Patients who undergo laryngeal surgery may benefit from a multidisciplinary team including a speech therapist in addition to the oto-rhino-laryngologist, in order to tackle swallowing and voice disorders, whether they are the cause or consequence of the surgery. This teamwork benefits the patient on several levels and the complementarity of the Speech Language Therapist (SLT) and the ENT illustrates in the assessment of voice and swallowing disorders as much as in the therapeutic options, for example, surgery and both direct and indirect therapy, in the case of benign vocal fold lesions, on the one hand, and head and neck cancer on the other. This chapter aims at clarifying how speech therapy can support the patients throughout the pre- and postoperative period, regarding timing, goals, and tools of speech therapy around laryngeal surgery, as well as set a framework for the patient-ENT-SLT triad in these cases with the different options at all of our disposal.
