France : Not living up to its ambitions

Résumé

When it comes to climate change policies and environmental protection, France has long held anambivalent position in comparison with other European countries, neither being a pioneer nor a climate leader. This is mainly due to a discrepancy between the ‘heroic rhetoric’that characterises political discourses about environmental protection and the ability to make these political goals operational. In this regard, President Macron’s firstmandate did not break with tradition.
