Leipzig rebirth of a “Hub–City” : stations, tunnel and multiscalar interconnections

Résumé

Leipzig can be in 2021 considered as one of the most dynamic East-German city, especially in the transport and logistics sector. This old city has the particularity of being at the crossroad of multiple networks of air, road and rail infrastructures (in middle age at the crossroad of the Via Regia and Via Imperii). Leipzig is now a very innovative city, historically based on trade, fair and open mind. Every year in May, the International Transport Forum (ITF) organized its summit in Leipzig, bringing together the world transport leader of politics and transport science. Concerning logistics, Leipzig is leading in East-Germany with logistics cluster and airport platform. Concerning transport activities, long distance railway transport started in Germany in Leipzig in the first half of the XIX century under the action of F. List (Leipzig – Dresden). The central point is the monumental railway station of Leipzig, completed in 1915 which connects the former Saxon railroads and the former railroads from Prussia. Today, as in the past, the question of interconnections has remained central to the debate on optimizing regional rail transport in Leipzig. A large underground tunnel in the city center was build connecting Leipzig's northern and southern networks. Starting in december 2013, the new City Tunnel Leipzig (CTL) has deeply affected Leipzig passenger regional railway transport with four new undergrounds railway stations in city center. Regional railway trains will not stop any more and turn back in the old railway station. This tunnel is connecting people from the Leipzig region to the city center, which is gradually becoming a gigantic shopping center. We will focus our paper on the new organization of the train station in Leipzig and the new role of the city tunnel for a better accessibility of the city center from the regions. Does this city tunnel has an impact on individual car mobility and then CO2 emission in Leipzig region ?
