Restructured or archaic? The hunt for shared morphological innovations involving Egyptian

Abstract

This article examines morphological traits shared by Egyptian with other Afroasiatic languages, focusing on the identification of shared innovations potentially relevant to subgrouping. Particular efforts are made to distinguish the effects of drift and contact from those of common origin. The results suggest that Egyptian is unlikely to subgroup with any other branch of Afroasiatic, and as such must have been one of the first to split off from the rest.
