The parliament of the invisible: democratizing and social studies research

La voix des invisibles : raconter la vie dans les organisations

Résumé

Not being visible, not having a voice, this is the double punishment for those who are lumped together in 'the people', who remain both unknown and unrecognised. Double violence, then: ethical violence on the one hand, from disrespect due to lack of recognition, from irresponsibility in front of those who have no faces, from the absence of care for the unseen; and political violence on the other hand: from the absence of listening to their voices, from the ventriloquism that makes us speak about them and for them in an abstract and objectifying language, from a denial of agency. Contrasting the conception of democratisation and representation held by the current French Presidency on the one hand and by Pierre Rosanvallon on the other, notably through the Raconter la vie project, we discuss the notion of democratisation in research. Different views are being debated about the possibilities and limits of representing the voice of the people and the 'invisible' in social science research.
