Inhabiting Together. Manure Contracts and Other Territorial Compositions Between Pastoralism and Agriculture in Western Burkina Faso
Résumé
In Western Burkina Faso, agriculture and pastoralism inhabit together in the same spaces. Despite very different spatial dynamics (sedentarity for agriculture, mobility for livestock), they maintain multiple relationships, sometimes mutually beneficial, sometimes conflicting. I draw on this case to show how building a territory allows to adjust and strengthen one’s relations with those on whom one depends to subsist. Firstly, I focus on spatial dynamics, such as pastoral mobilities and the way they combine different pastures. I describe how herders seek to stabilize pastoral spaces by trying to establish pastoral territories. This process involves a transformation from spatial relationships to territorial bonds. It also involves adjustments between territories. Finally, to inhabit a space is to inhabit it with all those who live there: building territories is a way of composing a mode of inhabiting that fits in with that of others.
