Reflexive tourism, rethinking the tourist experience for transformative changes.

Résumé

The challenges arising from climate change present a critical juncture for the tourism industry, encompassing both climate and carbon risks impacting destination management and tourist behavior. Literature reviews for Asia and Europe showcase the observable consequences in different parts of the world. Mitigating climate change necessitates action from global organizations down to individual behaviors, with individual efforts estimated to contribute significantly toward meeting emissions reduction goals. Tourism, especially in visibly affected destinations, emerges as a potential platform to foster pro-environmental behaviors through learning experiences. However, while knowledge acquisition plays a role, it alone proves insufficient in driving pro-environmental actions. Glacier tourism in the European Alps exemplifies the potential for promoting learning processes, presenting opportunities for tourists to comprehend climate change effects. To address the challenge of promoting pro-environmental behavior through tourism, a novel approach, termed reflexive tourism, is proposed. This approach, initially applied in dark tourism sites, aims to engage tourists in questioning the root causes and psychological factors contributing to climate change impacts, providing a theoretical framework for implementing reflexive tourism in climate-vulnerable tourism destinations.
