A study of Bidlīsī’s Sharafnāma and confessional ambiguity in Kurdistan
Résumé
At the turn of the seventeenth century, the Kurdish borderlands represented a major conflict zone between Safavids and Ottomans, which led the emirs of Kurdistan to frequently move across the border and switch sides. What was the impact of such moves on the emirs' confessional affiliations? In the Sharafnāma, Sharaf Khān Bidlīsī takes a nuanced view of the Sunni-Shia divide, without however crossing certain sectarian boundaries. The same approach seems to be found in two manuscripts of the book produced by Mīrakī b. Aḥmad, a copyist working for the Safavid Kurdish emirs of Ardalān. In this paper, I will argue that, despite the radical sectarianism put forth by the two warring states, a degree of confessional ambiguity persisted in Kurdistan throughout the Ottoman-Safavid conflict.
