Health and illness in correspondence in the early 18th century. The examples of Mme de Maintenon and Fénelon
Illness and health in Madame de Maintenon’s life are part of a strict institutional framework : the primacy of the King’s health, a sometimes critical respect towards Fagon. If one finds in her the trace of a preoccupation with the body and health as an object of personal concern, her approach remains spiritual and post-tridentine. The same is true of Fénelon. The experience of illness can be found in his correspondence where he anticipates the Enlightenment : to take care of one’s health, to assume suffering without exaggerating its religious meaning, to use the right means to be physically capable of fulfilling one’s social functions.
