VOICES OF PALESTINIAN REFUGEE YOUTH ACROSS THE NEAR EAST: SOCIO-POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND ASPIRATIONS

Résumé

The study focuses on an usually politically marginalized segment of Palestinian refugee society: refugee youth who are politically or socially active in their community(ies) and or host society across occupied Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria(*), and whose perceptions and aspirations about their status and their future, are important albeit often muted. First, the study analyses youth’s community participation in the refugee camps and host societies in terms of opportunities, constraints and alternative ways of advocating rights and interests. After exploring the meaning of identity as 'Palestinian', 'refugee', (often) 'stateless' and unwelcome 'foreigner' among youth's perceptions, the study also delves into youth aspirations for their future based on several factors, including their hopes to return to their homeland and for better living conditions in either their host country or abroad. Such aspirations are analysed through the prism of the refugees’ traditional claims for the recognition and implementation of their ‘right of return to Palestine’ and their representation of what ‘Palestine’ means for them today. The picture of Palestinian refugee youth that emerges from this study is that of a vibrant potential that deserves to be untapped and urges not to be lost.
