Subgrouping: Trees vs. waves
Résumé
In order to subgroup languages within families, two models have been proposed: the Tree Model and the Wave Model. As we examine the assumptions behing each approach, we argue that the Wave Model provides a more accurate way of understanding the diversification of language families than the Tree Model, while remaining faithful to the principles of the Comparative Method. We introduce Historical Glottometry, a quantitative implementation of the Wave Model, and showcase its recent application to the well-studied Germanic family. We conclude that the Wave Model does not merely complement the Tree Model, but rather subsumes it.
