Doing things with flags amongst journeymen in France
Based on an archival and ethnographic survey, the author proposes a reflection on the relations to flags and banners which are things that matter for communities of journeymen in France. For these so-called compagnons du Tour de France initially attached to the individual symbolism of the journeymen's "couleurs" (colors), the flag, carrying a collective dimension, emerged at the end of the 19th century to strengthen commitment requirements and ritualization of practices in a context of increased competition with other associative and workers' organizations. A relationship was forged with these "good big symbols", whose symbolic dimension was as much about the object itself as the way it was financed, manufactured, preserved, and displayed.
