Fashion and Tourism

Résumé

Tourism and fashion have common structures and similarities. For example, both phenomena have completed their ‘mass’ cycle and are currently seeking alternative ways of expression and development. Both industries are also important business sectors globally, tourism accounting for 10% of the global GDP with fashion amounting to 2%. Fashion and Tourism analyses the convergences between fashion and tourism from an academic perspective. It investigates the existing linkages between tourism and fashion industries, as well as how both industries synergistically impact each other through real-world examples. The central hypothesis is that these two modern ‘collaborative’ phenomena have been reciprocally influenced for 200 years. Each are major indicators of economic and political systems, cultures, values and imaginaries. Their parallel analysis allows us to better understand not only what one owes to the other, but also, how their parallel action both shapes and reflects contemporary societies.
