Wrestling with Context

Résumé

My specific contribution in this 'Interface' about context in planning, deals with how I've constructed a reflection on context an the difference it makes to planning ideas and solutions, moving as a Planning academic from Johannesburg (School of Architecture and Planning, Wits University) to Marseille (Department of Geography, Planning and Development, Aix Marseille University). Questioning why and how informal barbecuing practices in public parks are tolerated and (un)planned differently in the two contexts, the comparative analysis, based on echoes to and fro the two cases, leads to interrogating the concept of 'institutional activism' and its locally variegated meanings.
