Fields, Markets, Institutions and Networks

Résumé

Relations in sociology are conceived differently depending on the premises. The chapter first discusses three paradigms: functionalism, interactionism and genetic structuralism. Network theory relies on interactionist premises, in contrast with field theory, which considers that objective relations, based on an unequal distribution of forms of capital, condition individual action. While network theory is thus incompatible with field theory, the chapter shows that network analysis can be used as a method to explore relations within fields or transfers across (national) fields. Examples are given from two surveys on literary and scholarly translations, focused on publishers as intermediaries
