Jack Goody, Comparatism and the Theft of Democracy
Western political thinkers like to claim that democracy was invented by ancient Greece and rediscovered by modern Europe. But isn't this a case of the West stealing history by imposing its own past on the rest of the world? This is the strong thesis defended by British anthropologist Jack Goody. He insisted on this point in developments devoted to individualism, of which democracy represents the "political aspect": individualism is not an exclusively European invention; in other places and at other times, people have thought of themselves as individuals.
