The epithalame of Nicolas Bourbon for Jeanne of Navarre : from real marriage to ideal marriage
L’épithalame de Nicolas Bourbon pour Jeanne de Navarre : du mariage réel au mariage idéal
Résumé
Protected by Marguerite of Navarre, tutor of Jeanne d'Albret, the poet Nicolas Bourbon published in 1549, at the time of the marriage of his pupil with Antoine de Bourbon, a long epithalam to celebrate this union. However, this marriage had been imposed on Marguerite by her nephew Henri II and all sources attest to the dissatisfaction of the mother of the bride and the lack of luster of the ceremony. So why did the poet decide to sing about a wedding that so displeased his patroness? Was it pure clumsiness on her part? On the contrary, the article wants to show that Nicolas Bourbon, aware of the power of a poetry aere perennius, wanted to make this marriage, for eternity, an ideal one, and so is asking literature to correct the reality.
