E-commerce impact on freight and passenger mobility: lessons from an exploratory survey in Lyon, France

Résumé

E-commerce becomes a major subject of concern for freight operators and public authorities alike. But we just begin to approach its effect on passenger and freight mobilities. It is therefore essential to design collection methods to bring relevant measures to policy makers and decision makers. If households travel and freight surveys are rather well documented and benefit from decades of practice, e-commerce is a recent phenomenon mixing elements that are usually treated separately (freight and people) and elements that are out of mobility surveys’ scope (shopping behaviors). To contribute to these questions, we propose a methodology to understand the impacts of e-commerce on freight and people.
