Si c’est juste à mes yeux, c’est juste pour lui : comment les consommateurs évaluent-ils la justice du prix versé aux producteurs en coopératives agricoles ?

Abstract

Today, many agri-food brands are communicating their producer remuneration practices. Agricultural cooperatives offer a different remuneration model to that of the firm price paid by traders: they pay a relatively low price initially, which they top up over time with profits from the marketing of their products. Even if the producer does not know his remuneration when he sells, the cooperatives claim that their price-setting procedure is fairer, since it is the producers who receive the profits. We compare producers' and consumers' perceptions of this method of remunerating producers, collected through semi-structured interviews and a focus group. Our results show that elements of procedural justice predominate in assessing the fairness of producer remuneration, but that producers and consumers are not sensitive to the same elements.
