Home Care Technologies for Ageing and Dependent Individuals: An Interdisciplinary Comparison of Production and Implementation Practices between France, Japan, and South Korea

Résumé

The rise of connected devices has opened new perspectives for the cure and the care of ageing and dependent individuals. In France, these devices are integrated within e-health policies aiming to promote the ageing population's ability to remain at home. In Japan and South Korea, their implementation is primarily within medicalized institutions, driven by demographic pressure and rapid population ageing. Despite different demographical contexts, the three countries are facing problem on how to manage and take care of their ageing population. According to data established by the United Nations, Japan had the “world’s oldest population” in 2021, with more than 30% of its population aged over 65. While France ranked lower, it was still an ageing society, with 27% of its population aged over 60 in 2021. Lastly, in 2021, South Korea had only around 20% of its population aged over 65, but the country has an ageing rate that is raising rapidly and it is likely to surpass Japan3 before 2050. Focusing on these three countries is then a way to look at three stage of ageing population where technology is fully adopt but not with the same criteria, nor perception.
