The transformation of the space launchers industry: A comparison between U.S. vs. European R&D policies
Résumé
This exploratory research project examines the specific characteristics of the research and development (R&D) policies of American (SpaceX and Blue Origin) and European (ArianeGroup) companies operating in the space launch vehicle segment. Using patent data and developing appropriate metrics, the article proposes modelling and characterizing the knowledge bases of these companies over the period 2001-2021. Our findings reveal that the scientific and technical capabilities of U.S. companies differ from those of established players like Arianespace. Furthermore, we demonstrate that their evolution reflects distinct approaches to knowledge integration, R&D specialization, and commercial strategy.
