The Entre-deux-Mers bazadais is the northern appendage of the ancient Bazas' diocese situated between the Garonne and the Dordogne. From the Prehistory up to 1550, the ground occupation and populating of the area are the results of a neverending history which is largely dependent upon outer influences. Between the Paleolithic and the Protohistory, we could observe a two-pole expansion centred on the Dordogne's valley and lesser on the Garonne's. The Antiquity and the high Middle-Ages played a deciding role. Indeed, they permit the Garonne's valley to make great strides, the conquest of the Drot's valley and above all the one of the plateau. Then the Agenais and the Bordelais shared the country into two drawing poles separated by the Drot between them. Crossing the country, the Nord-South road from Poitiers to Zaragoza forms a federating axis, which contributed to link this country with two southern Garonne's entities born during the high Middle-Ages : the Gascogne and the Bazas' diocese which possessed from now on its northern enlargement, at the time of its renewal in 1050. At the end of the XIIIth century, all the sructurating components of the landscape are in position : the parish, the scattered accomodation and the seigniory. In an utterly subdued country, the wineyard makes great strides in the Dordogne's and Garonne's valleys, on the spur of both La Réole, the only urban centre, and Bordeaux, the ducal capital-city. Wars and outbreaks of the XIVth and XVth centuries challenge the established order and it is only the end of the XVth century's repopulation and reconstruction which will lead to recover a new balance during the first half of the XVIth century.
