Research on Cistercian Diplomatic in the 12th Century: La Ferté, Pontigny, Clairvaux, Morimond
In the Charter of Charity, the Cistercians affirm a strong ideal of unanimity. It is therefore necessary to determine whether this ideal was applied to the diplomatic domain, i.e. to acts. Four abbeys, La Ferté, Pontigny, Clairvaux and Morimond, were selected for this study. The choice was not arbitrary: they are the first four daughters of Cîteaux, born almost simultaneously, between 1113 and 1115, in a relatively small area. Their chronological and geographical proximity should have ensured them similar diplomatic uses. However, even if La Ferté, Clairvaux and Morimond have almost identical acts in their charters, the famous "pancartes", great differences appear between the four abbeys.
