Mapping and representation of space in Tunisia in the 19th century (1830-1881)
In what context is cartographic knowledge constructed on a national territory and how does this scientific knowledge exercise a strategic function? It is to this double question that the doctoral research project endeavored to answer by taking as a field of analysis Tunisia of the 19th century, from 1830, date of the beginning of the colonization of neighboring Algeria, to 1881, beginning of its protectorate by France. The card indeed represents a power to describe and a power to act. In this perspective, the study focuses first on individual explorations undertaken by European topographical travelers who have been able to develop reciprocal relations by hybridization of knowledge with local populations, and who have gradually translated their itineraries into maps of the Tunisian territory. The analysis is then devoted to the process which led to the transformation of the card into an instrument of politico-administrative management, in the field of education and at the level of the State, cities and borders. These two approaches are closely linked: they are indeed two moments of the same movement of construction of the Tunisian space through the forms of its cartographic representation.
