Supply chain micro-disruptions: Which impact for logistics systems?

Résumé

The social crisis of the Yellow Vests in France resulted in a series of public – and at times violent – demonstrations in urban centers as well as in suburbs. The article focuses especially on the occupation of traffic roundabouts. One of the consequences is that supply chains have been completely destabilized, with a new model emerging, based on multiple local micro-disruptions (blocking of traffic roundabouts), which complements the old model, based on a reduced number of macro-disruptions (blocking of hubs). The Yellow Vests crisis underlines the importance for logistics and supply chain management (SCM) research to take into account a social dimension for a better understanding of how supply chains work.
