The Digital Republic: Re-newing the French state via egovernment

Résumé

This chapter analyses the devlopment of e-government in France in the years 2000. It shows that the remodelling of the French state can to some extent be compared with the transition between the Fourth and the Fifth Republic, in a sense that it is sustained by discourses presenting e-gov as a big progress and a necessary step towards modernity. It also shows that it is a consumerist and professional conception of e-government that is promoted in France, following an economic rationalist model, where citizens are, above all, seen as customers.
