Belonging to a genre of films that melodramatically depicted le lives of young orphans, Lazarillo de Tormes won the Golden Bear Award at the 1959 Berlin Festival and became the first successful Spanish film at an international festival. The film adaptation of the first picaresque novel by César Fernández Ardavín is a good example of the limits imposed on artistic freedom in francoist Spain. The filmmaker resigned himself to collaboration with the censors on the writing of the screenplay. Though he attempted to give his film a touch of authenticity by filming in black and white and using the natural settings of the Castillan cities where the adventures of the young picaro took place, he profoundly modified an even misrepresented the literary work that inspired him by avoiding all satirical allusion to clergy and by adding a moralizing ending.
