Wherein did Confucian literati’s interests lie in Buddhism and Daoism during Chosôn period? : the case of Pak Sedang (1629~1703)

Résumé

This presentation, inspired by a synthesis of so far published analysis, aims at (re-) underlying the need to modify, to some extent, our general and persistent idea about Chosŏn Confucian literati’s attitude and viewpoint taken for exclusivist toward Buddhist and Taoist tradition. However, some Confucians commented Buddhist or Taoist scriptures even though their focus of interest and the position were in general on the Confucian principle. In general, they borrowed and explored Buddhist and Taoist ideas or discourses to criticize the contemporary Confucian society in degradation or violation of genuine Confucian spirit. It could mean that, to some extent, these scriptures or ideas from other traditions had such a spiritual or intellectual authority (or effectiveness) in Confucian scholarly society. However, it is not depending on an authority simply coming from a specific thought of those another traditions but from a comprehensive thinking common with Confucianism. In other works, an intertextuality was possible because Confucian thought had already an inherent possibility to share some viewpoints with Buddhism or Taoism. In these cases, Buddhist or Taoist scriptures provided themselves as “open text”. It seems similar with the innovation of Neo-Confucianism in its origin that had been fostered in an “open space” with Buddhist and Taoist thoughts. In this sense, the fact that the East Asian tradition of comprehensive or inclusive thought leading to conceive these three Teachings as an “open space” was also alive in Chosŏn society deserves our attention more than ever. To fathom how this comprehensive thought operated and developed in Chosŏn Confucians’ thinking could be another approach to the history of Confucianism of Chosŏn Korea.
