The inhabitant, an « amateur » of geographical space ? Theoretical and methodological reflections for a discussion of the sensitive perception of the environment and risk.

L’habitant, un « amateur » d’espace ? Réflexions théoriques et méthodologiques pour une analyse de la perception sensible de l’environnement et du risque.

Résumé

This article presents some of the results of a collaborative and interdisciplinary research involving geographers, political scientists, sociologists and linguists (ADAPTALITT, Tricot et al., 2012) : the research was dedicated to inhabit in the coast, the perception of risk of erosion and submersion related with collective actions. One hypothesis structuring this research was to question whether these phenomena and the attention they are subject, can be a possible “affordance” to perceive and accept climate change locally. A second hypothesis was to examine the relationship between cohabitation with risk and adaptation to future climate change. The chosen land concerned two Breton coastal towns: the peninsula Gâvres and Guissény. These towns have been very affected by Johanna storm of 9 and 10 March 2008 (A. Tricot, Lolive J., 2013) : as they caused few deaths, this event media less than Xynthia (February 28 - March 1 2010) whereas it was equally shattering. These two assumptions led us to study the perception of risks in a sensitive and pragmatic perspective. These issues were presented and discussed during the meeting of Cerisy (Ferrié, Tournay, Weisbein, 2012). We shall apply here to present the significant results both from an epistemological and méthodological point of view, include the field survey. This article is structured in four parts: First, talking about perceptions of risk will require some preliminary clarifications. The effects of climate change are considered in the litterature of risks as potential hazards : they are classicaly opposed to known risks. But what makes the characteristic of a risk is its potential, so the caesura seems artificial. We quickly recall some elements of the debate between “real risks” and “risks built” ; then we present those relating to the concept of sensitivity in risk analysis, at least we will present our position in this debate. Working about perception is also ask the question about the perceiver and its integration (or not) in the analysis: so we discuss the issue of profane and amateurs. Two concepts close but not similar, they do not obey the same constraints justification in public space at least we present our choice for the figure of the amateur. In the second part we will present specifically the results of a research applied on the peninsula Gâvres (Morbihan) in May 2012. We then come to the presentation of the methodological device of this research, its relation with previous notions in the idea of “perception located”. Finally, we will speak about perception as change tracking activity in the landscape or living environment. The perception is organized as a form “of resident survey”, attentive to low noise phenomena. Finally, we discuss the collective postures we noted in this exercise : find solutions , imputation of responsibility, expression of a disorder. Ultimately the activity of judgment seems to make the difference between sensible perception of the environment and sensitive perception of risk.
