Nominal Determination as a Reservoir for Lexical Creation

Generally speaking the Arabic lexicon is mostly formed by derivation from the crossing of a root and a pattern; the share of composition remains marginal. However, it is indicative of the transformation processes based on syntax and semantics that, from a “free” syntactic association, lead to the formation of a linguistic sign. More specifically, in this paper, we discuss the transformation process which shows that many of the analyzed nominal compounds (lexical units in which two related terms point to a unique referent) are the results of semantic shifts linked to the nature of the referent and to the motivation of the linguistic sign. To do so we will present: 1) The types of syntactic relations: N + (DEF) N; Name of unit + N; Determination Support Pronoun + N; N + RELATOR + N; 2) The relationships between the types of syntactic and semantic relations: identity, complementarity or attribution; 3) The relationships between the types of syntactic and semantic relations and the access to meaning (transparent, opaque, partially opaque) of the compounds and the links with analogy and encyclopedic knowledge; 4) The relationships between composition, motivation and figurative use.
