Philosophical and Sociological Reflections on Labour Law in Times of Crisis

Résumé

Starting from the assertion that crisis is part of the essence of labour law, this international compendium of essays is written by labour law researchers from different countries, who accepted the challenge of critically reflecting on the same disciplinary branch. Although the global health crisis related to Covid-19 was only in its beginning stages when the call for contributions to the present book was launched, it was clear that this crisis would have further social and economic consequences in all countries. Despite the different ways in which the overwhelming effect manifests in each country, it is certain that this period will scar the juridical sector. This observation also justifies the temptation to reflect on labour law from a global point of view. Given that work guarantees subsistence for a considerable part of the population in different states, labour law has an undeniable societal and economic impact and therefore is necessarily affected by the current crisis. This book reflects on what effectively constitutes labour law, considering questions which are not usual within labour law. Insights from philosophical, sociological and even economic standpoints are mobilised to reconcile the past with the future of labour law.
