Brutus or Erostrate ? Figures of the regicide attack in the XIXth century
Starting from the alternative stated by Lorenzaccio in Musset's famous play (1834), this article proposes a journey through a long 19th century seen as the twilight era of the regicidal attack. I first recall the long persistence of regicide in Western politics, before analysing the possible ways by which this singular crime of "modern Brutus" can be justified or even defended. Finally, I show the increasingly general relegation of this kind of attack to anachronism and nonsense or "erostratism".
