Pontifes et flamines dans le commentaire de Servius à l'Enéide

Résumé

This paper studies the Servian notes on the pontiffs and the flamens in the Aeneid as a coherent collection. Servius, and especially Servius Danielis, demonstrate that Virgil wanted to depict Aeneas and several other characters as pontiffs or flamens, and make them respect formulae or taboos linked to their priestly status. The information on these priesthoods, attested elsewhere, dates back at least to scholars of the Late Republic; what is original is how the commentator tries to apply it to fictional characters. He aims at defending the poet and his characters, and at holding sophisticated discussions on the traditional Roman religion, perceived as common culture in Late Antiquity.
